A student's loss with tears

It breaks your heart. Seeing a student struggle this week broke my heart. My student's mother died over Spring break and I have no words to describe how heartbreaking that is. He came back to school on Monday and the week got worse and worse as time went on. He did okay on Monday and Tuesday but reality set in Wednesday and his behavior went down hill the rest of the week.

Who can blame him?

A first grader losing his mom unexpectedly sucks. Pure and simple. My heart aches for him, his siblings, and his family. He is so sad and I just want to cry with him.

While I don't condone his acting out, I do know that it's normal. Comforting him with a hug and embracing him is the only way I know how. Praying, by myself, is the only other resort I can give right now.

I don't know the details.

All I know is a first grader lost his mother last week and he is devastated.

I've got some explanin' to do

Life has been a whirlwind and I apologize for keeping you hanging. One of my dear friends has a daughter in the ICU. She just had her ventilator removed today after multiple days. It is amazing. Karis has such a long way to go but this is a step in the right direction. She is in an enormus amount of pain and is still struggling though. Her care page is here. She's only 9 and my heart breaks. I've been going up to see her all the free chances I can.

I accepted a long term substitute job last week and started this Wednesday. I've been subbing so much lately and have felt the "first year teacher effects" lately. I have this job until the Christmas holidays. It's great and very time consuming. I am at school until around 5-6 most days. I deal with all sorts of students. I am subbing for a resource teacher. It is fun and demanding all at the same time. :)

Done by 8-I'm totally worthless after 8. I spend my nights waiting for bedtime and get up way before the sun rises. I will get back into the jig of things but am having trouble adjusting this time.

So...that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Absent, MIA, issues...

Last week, I finally felt better from my sinus surgery. This week is a whole 'nother matter. It's not necessarily my nose, per say, but it is the side they took all the junk out of.

In addition to the pain, I've been having daily migraines, that cause massive nausea, since last week plus am in the middle of a reflux flare. I am just not having the best of days medical wise.

I go back to the ENT next Monday and honestly can't wait. This is ridiculous! I should not be having all this pain on a daily basis.

Okay...vent over!

It's not all daisies and roses over here

Day by day...

Three days ago, we had Nonni's service and it was beautiful. Lots of friends and family came to show their affection/appreciation of her. It was a service to remember. I was in awe of the support I was given.

Since Nonni went down hill, I've had an amazing support system. I appreciate and thank you too. It's been really rough for me and I have my moments. I've been touched by the outgoing support I've received. I tell the public I'm okay but inside I'm not. Truthfully, I'm struggling. She was my confidant & listener.

I know it will get better. For now, I'm taking it day by day.

Heaven received an angel on June 1st

June 1st is a day I'll never forget. Nonni died on June 1st just two days out of the hospital. It's been a rough week.

Services are on June 8th. She was a fantastic grandma & is already missed.

I appreciate your prayers and thoughts. I'm doing "okay" but have my moments. It's just hard.

Obituary for Nonni

I love you, Nonni!!

She's still holding on...barely

If you would have told me that my Nonni would barely be hanging on today, for life, I would not have believed you. Just three weeks ago, I graduated college and she was right there—watching me walk across the stage. While she was not at her best, she was there. One week ago, today, we embarked on this scary and frightening road. My family and I hoped and prayed that she would bounce back…eventually. She always did; what made this time so different?

Four days ago, Nonni’s doctor ordered hospice. My mom and uncle, initially, looked for a facility. But it became clear that her needs were too great to be in a room by herself. She does not have the energy to call a nurse, every bone and muscle in her body hurts, and she was having trouble swallowing and sucking from a straw. Two days ago, my mom and family made the decision to let Nonni go home to her place and bring hospice to her.

Nonni was discharged from the hospital Tuesday. The hospital set up home hospice care. Nonni seems more relaxed at home and will be kept comfortable. There is a nurse and my mom, uncle, and/or I are with her at all times. She is DNR and has multiple medical difficulties. While she is still breathing and holding a pulse, she is starting to slip away slowly.

On Tuesday evening, my mom, the hospice nurse, and I had a discussion about how/what increasing difficulty to live would look like. The nurse said that everyone is different but described some symptoms. The leading thought into this question occurred when I read that Nonni had a majority of the characteristics/symptoms of the phase “near death.” This, initially, scared me. But as Tuesday went on, I figured out something.

Nonni’s body is barely hanging on. Her kidneys are starting to shut down, her digestive system is not digesting much now, and her swallowing/sucking abilities are lessening. She is not eating enough to sustain life. She is just so weak and frail. My mom reminded me that her body has been through so much and she deserves to be without pain. Hospice care will keep her comfortable but will not be using extraordinary measures to keep her alive.

While discharging from the hospital Tuesday, Nonni’s nurse said something that made sense to me. She hugged me goodbye, let me cry on her shoulder, and said “it won’t be long now.” While walking through the doors of the Cardiac ICU, it hit me. We are, essentially, keeping her comfortable, and letting her die, at home, when it’s her time. We would not be back on the Cardiac ICU floor again. Her doctors and nurses wanted her home and comfortable for her last few days.

While there is no specific timeline as to when Nonni may pass, it is evident that it’ll be soon. My days are now filled with keeping an eye on Nonni and talking to her. I continue to look up to her and she is one strong woman.

Please continue to pray that Nonni is comfortable and her pain is manageable. We do have some basic medications and wonderful pain medication for her. My family and I covet your prayers as we face grief and sadness.

Prayer request: It's bad & difficult

My mom's mom, Nonni, is my biggest supporter. She's been in my corner through thick & thin. We've been through so much together & she's my number one fan.

She's not doing well & hospice has been called in. I understand that hospice will make her comfortable but watching her get weaker and weaker breaks my heart. Usually, when she gets sick, she bounces back after 48 hours. Not this time. I've never seen her this bad. She's too weak to stand, is in pain, confused, and really fragile. She's also having difficulty swallowing & is essentially not eating.

This all started a week ago when she thought she had a stomach bug. By Wednesday, she was having trouble taking her medication so mom & I brought her to the ER. She was diagnosed with a severe bacterial infection. She was admitted Wednesday night and has slowly gotten worse on a daily basis. She has congestive heart failure (and more) that can't be fixed & is causing more harm now.

I realize her body may be done but that scares me. It may be selfish to say I'm not done, with her, yet but it's true. She will be 80 this year. No one can tell us how long she'll go on but we've come to realize not for much longer. I have mixed emotions with this that I've been struggling with. I don't want her to be in pain. I want her to be pain-free actually. But loosing her altogether?

I'm asking for prayers for my Nonni & for my family as we all face what's in front of us. Near death is not easy to face.

Thank you for your prayers & support!!

Prayer request

Alex is a 6 year old little boy who is fighting for his life right now. He is on a ventilator, sedated, and is currently in the PICU with sepsis & a central line infection. He spiked a fever, had several seizures, and went down hill very quickly. He was airlifted from DFW to Houston for intensive treatment. He receives his nutrition from a G-Tube and Central Line due to a mitochondrial disease. He is very sick right now.

I am asking you to lift Alex & his family up as Alex continues to struggle. They really need a miracle and my hope is to blanket this family in prayers.

Here is his blog link:

Feet surgery & a prayer request

Good Sunday morning to you! My intentions were not keep away from the computer but life happened. I had feet surgery on Friday afternoon to correct a problem with both feet and have been adjusting to not putting pressure on my big toes and not hitting them on anything. Stitches will come out Friday but until then I cannot get both feet and dressings wet. Fabulous I know. In all honesty, this needed to happen. You really can't describe the pain though. Walking this week will be a challenge but I will get through!

My prayer request is for healing and as little pain as possible. I am crossing my fingers for no infection and for strength to teach 3rd graders in the morning this week. It is part of my Maymester and I can't get out of it. As long as no one steps on the feet, I will be good!

Waiting, update, & a prayer request

I am sooo sorry it has been so long since I have last updated. Between 19 hours, projects, and finals this week, I have really not had time. BUT finals just finished today and I have a little time to blog now. Sure I am taking a Maymester class starting next Tuesday-but hey, it ain't 19 hours! I am officially DONE with taking so many hours!!!!

Now the waiting game continues as I wait for my final grades. I am usually a patient person but when something like this comes along, I am just ready for the results asap. It's like waiting for your favorite cake to come out of the oven :)

I have missed my blogging time and the sweet comments that I got so I am so glad summer is here, for me anyways!

Prayer request: Cochran Quads-Two of the Cochran quads are in the hospital with Rotovirus and two of the other little ones have it at home too. Never a dull moment for Sandra's kids. Keep them in your prayers please! They need them now!

Simplifying

Simplifying: a word I am not used to. A week ago I was diagnosed with anemia plus another issue (e-mail for details) and have been experiencing severe fatigue to the point where I am tired all the time.

SO

I have to now simplify my life and activities and focus on school for the most part. There are only TWO weeks of school before a week of finals and they look just packed of projects and miscellaneous stuff to complete.

THEREFORE

I have to give up my babysitting job and volunteer activities on Wednesday afternoons. I may not like this idea but it is for the best until I get my energy back.

I ASK

For prayers as I finish my last semester of my Junior year (19hours) and for my sickness to go away. A plus would be for the return of my energy too.

Have a great Tuesday!!!

Thankful Thursday & Prayer request

I have been amazed this week by people who care and I am extremely thankful for them. I am also thankful for my momma who makes a morning call to be sure I am awake on some days. This week has been a week like no other, seriously, and I am thankful for and to those who genuinely care.

Prayer request: It is for ME. I am experiencing EXTREME fatigue and am just not myself. I am more than willing to share with you what is up through email. I am not trying to be difficult just cautious. I am just asking for prayers for a while. Thank you!

Love shown through tough times

I spend my Saturdays at a friend of the family's home and do laundry while spending time with the couple that live there. Through out the years and even before I was born, Donna and Bill have always been a part of my family's life. My mom and uncle grew up with Donna and Bill's children and my grandma went to High School with D. So this family is VERY special to my heart!

Donna's health over the years has not always been the best but she has managed. This year, though, her health seems to be taking a turn for the worst and she spends a majority of the day in her bed or in a chair in the living room. Her balance is off and she tends to fall backwards when she stands causing her to take many falls. These falls result in black and blue spots. But her spirit is still there most days.

Then her husband Bill, who is gold by the way, is there helping her each and everyday. Bill cares so much for Donna and it is amazing how much he loves her even through thick and thin. He pretty much stays with her all day, everyday. He takes her to appointments, rearranges appointments if she cannot go, and is there to help HER. He relays on a nurse who helps her bathe once a week, a housekeeper every other week, and those who come to care for her to get a break. When I am there, he has no problem leaving her. But he stays if no one else is there.

Donna may not understand why Bill cares for her each and everyday and does not leave her alone with out someone else there with her. But I do and it is in the vows they took over 50 years ago "through sickness and health" all the days of their lives.

This shows true love and it is amazing to still hear and see it!

Thankful Thursday

Hello blogging world! Hope you are having a great week. I have a story to share and a thankful thought included.

This week, one of the faulty members' husband was in a car accident and is in the ICU with a breathing tube due to really low BP and difficulty breathing. The kicker, literally, is that he is a quadriplegic and he did have use of his arms/hands before the accident. Now he does not and has become very agitated. Who wouldn't be? Marcus has 2 broken legs and a broken back above where he was injured to before. This man and his wife, who is a professor at my college, have been heavy on my heart this week. I ask you to pray for Marcus and his wife Lindsey as they have a long road ahead of them.

I am thankful that I can get up from any position and put one foot in front of the other. This is a luxury that Marcus does not have.

Have a great day!!!

My life right now & spillin' it

First and foremost I want to thank all of you for your sweet thoughts and prayers throughout this past week. If you follow me on twitter, I said something to the effect of pray for my medical issues right now. I am going to go ahead and spill it now to you all. These are not life threatening but just a pain in my side right now day in and out.

I was put on Nexium 40mg for my acid reflux disease and it is not doing its job right now at all. I am in pain and nothing is really relieving it. AH! It worked for a while but it came back with a vengeance. I believe a GI will be in my future soon. Then to make matters worse I am fighting with chronic thrush in my mouth and it keeps coming back. This past month, I have been on the oral lozenges and had Diflucan on three different occasions. This bites...literally! I have tried limiting starches/sugar but have had no avail. I am not stressing much either so it's not that! Next up I will try something homeopathic to try to kick this. UH...not what I need.

So right now...I am loving college and my life right now is actually wonderful asides from my medical drama. But hey...if some sort of drama were not in my life I would actually be a little off so everyday is a new day and today I will see as just that!

It's a curse and a blessing all in one

First I have to say thank you to all of you who have told me to get better. I have really appreciated your kind and thoughtful words. Today, I was finally starting to feel better but I have been wheezing and coughing really bad. So I went to see my wonderful and favorite doctor who did not like my "junky," his medical word, sound in my chest. SO I had a chest xray and long behold...I have pneumonia & fluid around both eardrums. Well ain't that just fine and dandy...NOT.

But I do have to say that Dr. Wonderful upped my steroids (prednisone), gave me a strong, kick butt antibiotic (Levaquin), and also gave me a prescription for Diflucan just in case the antibiotic gives me another kind of issue. I will also continue my nebulizer treatments every four hours. Yippee for me! So from the medication standpoint, I am set.

The curse may be that I have little to no immune system due to the already prescribed steroids that I am still on from the flu(s) and an URI AND am on a (supposed) break, but the blessing is that I am not having to miss school for these illnesses. Kind of a curse and a blessing at the same time...but I will take it and not miss school thankyouverymuch!

If you would keep me in your prayers for a quick, yet full, recovery I would appreciate it.

Crunch time

Finals stink and make my life miserable...there I said it! Today I have three finals and the one I am most worried about is my last one. It is a comprehensive final over Diverse cultures/education and I am actually, dare I say it, nervous over it! I also have two projects due too.

If you could keep me in your prayers today...I would really appreciate it. Trying to stay positive here!
