Lying about food allergies does more harm than good

This week I saw another article about a mother lying about food allergies so that their vegan lifestyle would be taken seriously. This got me thinking.

Food allergies are a life threatening issue that causes major effects if a food is eaten that one is allergic to. Veganism is a personal choice that as one chooses not to eat any dairy or animal by product. That is a personal choice. No one chooses to have food allergies. No one chooses or likes to experience anaphylaxis.

Restaurants have the ability to accommodate those with food allergies. Some do it better than others though. Sometimes, though, it takes research. Planning, asking, calling, emailing, and inquiring about certain foods, cross contamination, ingredients, and methods used to cook. All that happens before one can eat out. It is a daunting experience, sometimes, to trust others to cook for a food allergic. However, most can effectively do that. Restaurants that are good with food allergies earn respect of others in the food allergy community. If someone says they are "allergic" when it's just a personal choice then that does not build the awareness of food allergies. It is just lying. It discredits the term "food allergy.
Pure, plain, and simple. There are both food allergy aware restaurants and vegan options available for all. Researching and asking questions can help.

Chef Keith Norman is no stranger to food allergies and has dedicated his career to providing options to those with food allergies. Norman presently serves as the food and safety manager and Assistant Executive chef at South Point hotel in Las Vegas. Having met Norman at the Food Allergy Bloggers conference last year, he truly "gets" food allergies and successfully fed many with sensitivities and anaphylactic allergens at the conference. He continues to work with the hotel to assure that those with food allergies and other food difficulties can eat safely. With his team of chefs, they successfully fed all without incident. That, in itself, is a huge accomplishment.

The bottom line is simple. Food allergies are severe and have the potential to cause anaphlyaxis even with the smallest bite. Veganism is a personal choice and will not cause anaphylaxis even with the smallest molecule. While vegans have a choice to avoid all animal derivatives, food allergics must take strict avoidance to the foods that could potentially kill them. The smallest molecule, for me, will cause anaphylaxis. Respect each others beliefs and their personal life choices, yes, but do not lie about food allergies just if you are choosing not to eat something.

New Find: Amore di Mona chocolate

Anything chocolate peaks my interest. So, when I was browsing an online supplier for specialty foods, Caramela with Crunchy Coffee Beans peaked my interest. On a whim, I ordered a bar from Peanut Free Planet.

I am so glad I did! The texture is like a chewie chocolate bar but with a rich taste like a gourmet chocolate bar would be. The coffee taste was very present but it was a good texture and taste.

What's amazing about this company?

The side of the box says it all. What's not on the box is even more impressive. This company is vegan, gluten free, low-glycemic friendly, raw, organic, and non-GMO certified.

The best part about all this is that the chocolate is top-8 allergy friendly and is making an effort to accommodate those with food allergies.

The box contained three squares of chocolate caramel (like) goodness. I shared it with my family who, for the most part, liked it too.

Amore di Mona Carmela with Crunchy Chocolate Beans rocked my world! I'd like to try their other chocolates soon.

Where to buy?
Whole Foods (in store)
Amazon

I give Amore di Mona two thumbs way up.

Anaphylaxis, it can happen

This week, May 11-17, 2014, is the #FAAW {Food Allergy Awareness week}. Food allergies can occur in anyone and I wanted to write about why I always carry Epi or Epinephrine at all times.

{Photo Credit: Kids with Food Allergies}

Food allergies, for me, did not develop until after the age of 15 or so for me. Don't get me wrong, I have many other allergies. Seasonal, environmental, medication, insects, pollen, and the list goes on. For many, food allergies can occur in children and some may outgrow their allergies. It totally depends on the person. Each case is different.

Anyways, I did not develop food allergies until around 15. For me, they started as daily hives {later discovered to soy, wheat, and more} and my hands would swell {with shellfish|}. After doing my own research and working with my Allergist, I discovered I had many allergies to foods. Today, a single crumb or morsel can send me into anaphylaxis.

My current list of food allergies includes Soy (all forms), Wheat, Gluten, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Fish, Shellfish, Modified Starches, and Coconut (all forms). That would be six of the Top 8.

I was thinking I was doing pretty good. I had Epi, I had a list of what I couldn't have, and all was dandy. I was wrong.

Anaphylaxis happened even though I was careful!

It happened to cross contamination and soy lecithin as well as fish. I had to use epi as well as have it given to me. Within minutes, my symptoms (hives, swelling, others) lessoned. If it wasn't for epinephrine, I can't think of what today would look like.

Accidents can occur and that is why you always have epi.

A label can be misread and anaphylaxis can occur. That's why you have epi!

A company doesn't list a warning that items are run on the same lines (since warning labels are voluntary) and anaphylaxis occurs.

Epinephrine is the only drug that can reverse Anaphylaxis (source).

If you or someone you know has food allergies or any known anaphylactic allergy, they must carry it on them.

Epinephrine saves lives. I know, I was one of those lives!

Failed soy lecithin challenge

Lately, I have been testing the waters with my soy lecithin allergy. I am still highly anaphylactic to soy protein and oil but have been have been having good luck with soy lecithin as the seventh or more ingredient. Meaning, if soy lecithin is the seventh ingredient or less down the ingredient list, I was okay.

Last night proved that I am still highly allergic to it and that just truly stinks. Most soy allergics are okay with soy oil and lecithin {source}. I, unfortunately, am not.

I tried a product with soy lecithin as the fifth ingredient just to see. I was fine, initially, but was covered in hives and miserable 30 minutes later. The rest of the night, I was just off thanks to the enormous amount of benedryl I took. My eyes were itchier than normal but I couldn't tell if that was related or not.

So, soy lecithin is now off the table completely and it stinks. Soy lecithin is in so much. It would have been more convenience but still. A failed challenge just bites.

#FABlogCon is a smashing success

I had the opportunity to attend the Food Allergy Bloggers Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, from November 2nd through November 4th and was seriously blown away.

This conference was for people who wanted to come together for a greater good. As a whole, we all came together, shared our walks of life, and learned how to be better advocates as a food allergy community. This community not only supports but embraces each person in it. This was unlike anything I had ever imagined or dreamed of. There is so much to tell and share. I can't do it all in one post but will hit the highlights today.

The masterminds behind this beautiful event are Jenny Sprague {blog} and Homa Woodrum {blog}. Not only was this conference unlike anything I've ever seen or heard, this conference was planned across the country, literally. Jenny is from Maine and Homa was local. It truly had talent from the moment you walked in the conference doors.

One of the coolest things at the conference...

What I didn't realize is that I would converse and interact with so many professionals and members of the food allergy community. I put faces to twitter handles and met some awesome people in the process. It was an instant bond that is now deeper. It was a little intimidating, at first, when I am standing around Dr. Micheal Pistiner and Dr. John Lee of AllergyHome, Dr. Paul Ehrlich & Henry Ehrlich of AsthmaAllergiesChildren.com, and Dr. Donna DeCosta of FoodAllergyMomDoc. I mean, I am a blogger who has food allergies but I didn't have a M.D. in my name or a book to show.

What I realized, though, is that we all had a purpose at this conference and that was to come together, in one location, and advocate with one another. It didn't matter what my credentials were or what everyone else had. It was about a common goal of building a strong community of support and advocacy.

One of the highlights of this conference was the food itself!

When I registered for this conference, I was told to list all my allergies. That's a list and it included six anaphylactic allergies and that, in itself, was hard. I didn't want to be a burden on anyone. I also didn't want to suffer an allergic reaction in a different city. However, Chef Keith Norman and his wonderful chefs made everything either safe for me or had wonderful alternatives. I had zero fear while eating and did not suffer a reaction. That was a huge victory!

The SWAG...

Thank you, Enjoy Life, for the phenomenal swag & bag!

Thank you Whole Foods for the great bag! Swag details will be shared later.

Bottom line...
For the first Food Allergy Bloggers Conference, the expectation was set extremely high. Not only is this a must attend event, it supports, encourages, and motivates you to keep at it. It was a wonderful conference that has left me motivated and willing to do more in the food allergy community. Follow ups to the conference, in detail, to follow.

Can't wait for the plans for next year! This conference not only empowers but encourages and supports in one setting. A common goal defined and a connection deeper than just online.

Thank you so much to Homa and Jenny for this wonderful idea and conference! You truly outdid yourselves!

Coming soon: Products, pictures, and info from the GFAF expo

I had the opportunity to attend the GFAF expo October 26th and October 27th. I have many pictures and products to share with you. It was an amazing weekend and there are items that will be much more than just gluten free.

Please be patient with me! I will have a multi-post series just about the event and all that it offered.

This event was much more than a showcase of various products, it was also a huge connection with people who "get it" and understand GF and food allergies. It was a wonderful experience. I hope to share glimpses with you.

Be back soon...

Can't we all just get along and support one another?

Call it a case of the Mondays or just fed up business but I am sick of it. I am sick of people bashing others just because they don't agree with what someone does or does not do. Being apart of social media, it's a love/hate relationship. I see many people (on twitter) supporting and encouraging one another. I see, on other outlets (Facebook specifically), that people just don't support and are quick to judge.

Why judge when you haven't walked in that person's shoes? Why judge when you don't know their exact feelings? Why judge at all?

As a society, I feel the need to support and not judge. As a human, who makes mistakes, I see the need to give words of support and not discourage others.

As a person on social media, I ask you to support and lift people up. Be present and supportive. Give your opinion peacefully. Be open to ideas. Be open to support.

Just support one another!

What's so cool about the GFAF Expo?

Imagine life without convenience foods. Pretty dull, huh? Convenience foods have come a long since I went GF several years ago.

Several years ago, the most convenience foods out there were fairly dull and lacked variety. Since then, the allergy friendly and GF market has boomed.

Getting the 411 on new GF and allergy friendly products can be challenging if you're not attached to every single distributor and have gobs of extra time on your hands. SO, the GFAF expo is ideal for those that are looking for newer products or want to try some samples or talk with company representatives and give vital feedback.

Better yet, you get to be around people that "get it" and it's a breath of fresh air. It's nice when you don't have to explain to every single person why you are GF and beyond.

For me, being GF is a must due to a severe allergy to it and more. So, while every product may not be in my safe range, I can still share the updates and new products news directly to you. Being a Dallas blogger for GFAF Expo means that I will share new product updates, news from companies, and exciting new products on the horizon.

The GFAF expo has over 150+ vendors that are sample and coupon ready just for you. It's not all about the food though. It's about the experience and the variety that is brought to you in distance & reach.
