Newspaper articles...I want YOUR input

Now is your chance since I want YOUR input. I write for my school newspaper as Managing Ed and have one op/ed piece to write and one religion article to get started on.

* Op/Ed article "What do you think about Obama's Special Olympics comment?" Be honest and let me know how you truly feel.

On Jay Leno ...
Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.
He bowled a 129, the president said.
"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.
It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.
*************************************
* Religion article "Women in the ministry" What do you think about women being able to be ministers? Be honest and open about this one!

I look forward to reading your responses!

Have a blessed Sunday

Avoid the news as much as possible these days, most of it just irritates me. So you will have to bring me up-to-date on what he said.

I think Obama's comment wasn't meant in a degrading way. No big deal. We all say stupid things every once in a while and he did apologize. Everyone just needs to get over it.

As for women in the ministry. From my own point of view I don't think women can administer the blessings of the priesthood. Heavenly Father gave this divine right to men for a good purpose. Just because a woman doesn't have the priesthood doesn't mean she can't serve in other meaningful ways.

Don't know about the Obama comment. Hadn't heard about it. i avoid the news as much as possible. lol!

Regarding women in ministry, I know there are those with different beliefs as mine. I hope we can respectfully read each others comments and agree to disagree. I am 100% supportive of women in ministry. My husband & I were blessed to be affirmed in our ministry a week ago by both being ordained to the ministry. We also just got home from a fellow (female) seminary student's ordination. What an amazing experience to be a part of how God is working in lives like ours. I believe that God created men equal to women. Yes, there are things that men do better and things that women do better, but I believe we can both minister in our own special ways. We are blessed to be part of a seminary and part of a seminary that affirms women in ministry.

Wow! Those are so good topics. Ugh! Politics - I am trying to avoid it as much as possible.

I am also the Worst Debater. I am torn on Obama's comments. Part of me says, Wow, that was tacky and could be hurtful for anyone who has a special child or it could be hurtful to someone who is mentally challenged. But the other side says, did he really mean it? As in, was he trying to derogatory statement against anyone who is the Special Olympics? I doubt it. See, I am the worst debater!

Good luck on your papers!

While I think that it was completely wrong for him to make that comment, and he really needs to watch what he says now that he is the president, he was making fun of HIMSELF. Not the Special Olympics.

Oh my word, I love your women in ministry question! I wrote my thesis on this issue!!
Here's what I think, I think women can teach in private (like Priscilla did) but not be pastors. The issue I have with this is if she is the pastor and her family attends the church she is probably the spiritual leader in the home and that is NOT okay.
I could go on and on, but I'll spare you! If you want to talk more about it feel free to email! I'd love to know your view and thoughts!=)

Elyse,
I don't know how I missed this post (probably 'cause I was at work!)
I was the managing editor of my college paper too! Anywho, women in ministry-okay if leading Bible studies or running the children's ministry. As pastors no.
Politics, I refuse to go there...
What about the conveniences that students have today like ipods and laptops etc. Or the effect of those kids in youth groups, are they really being led to the Lord or just hanging out with friends.
Let me know if these helped, sorry so late!

i totally agree with suzanne and lindsey on the woman issues. they spoke exactally what i would have shared. women can preach to women, but not a pastor.
i didn't know obama said that. i agree he was probably making fun of himself BUT should've watched what he said because it could be taken WAYYYYYYYYY out of context.

Personally, I think Obama goofed. He showed his true colors and said something really stupid. End of the world? No. I think it's right that he apologized, but I don't think he meant anything by it. Should have NEVER said it, though.

Women: I think they are great "ministers" but I wouldn't want a woman pastor. If my church hired a woman to be the senior pastor, I'd probably have to find a new church. It just doesn't seem natural to me.

I agree with the general consensus about Obama's comment...he shouldn't have said it, but I don't think he was trying to demean the Special Olympics or its competitors in any way.

As for women in the ministry...I personally believe the Bible clearly teaches that women are not to be in a place of authority over men (1 Corinthians 11:3) and that pastors are given authority over their flock (Titus 1, 1 Timothy 3 & 5). Therefore, the logical conclusion is that, Biblically, women should not be pastors. However, that by no means they don't have a place in ministry!! "Older" women are instructed to teach "younger" women (Titus 2), there are bountiful examples of women ministering in various ways (the Proverbs 31 woman, Dorcas [Acts 9], Lydia [Acts 16], and Priscilla [Acts 18]), and 1 Corinthians 11:8-12 explains that men and women are dependent on each other--we are simply created to fulfill different roles. We are equal in value, though not necessarily "equal" in the sense that "anything you can do, I can do, too".
